River City Rowing Club Junior
Learn to Row Program
Overview
Learn to Row offers teens ages 13 to 19 years old the opportunity to
learn the fundamentals of rowing while getting actual experience crewing a
racing shell. It's a great opportunity to acquire new skills, try out a
fascinating sport, improve conditioning...and have a huge amount of
fun in the process.
During the summer, two ten-day Learn to Row sessions are conducted,
with RCRC coaches doing the teaching and experienced rowers on hand to
help show the ropes. The course is designed for teens with no rowing
experience. Participants will learn sweep rowing techniques in four and
eight-person shells. Each session consists of ten "on the water" classes
in which rowers learn the proper execution of the rowing stroke, as
well as rowing commands and boat handling. The course is co-ed and
is coached in a well-organized and non-competitive atmosphere.
Because of the limited number of seats available and the dramatic learning
curve, participants are strongly encouraged to attend all ten of the daily classes during their
session. It is particularly important that participants attend the first
and last class of each session. Classes are typically held in the late
afternoon.
Cost of participating in the program is $100 for the two-week session.
Students are not required to purchase any additional equipment in order to
participate.
